[lonely pixel news]new game

April 22, 2010 Leave a comment

What’s funny is that arrow followers started as a “hey, let’s try this…” sort of experimental game and it evolved into what it is today; something much more complex than I had originally planned. Which is why its taking so long to complete but also because I’m doing it by myself, well, the coding anyways. Carlo is doing me a big favor by working on the audio.

Anyways, as I mentioned in a previous post, I’m going to work on another project for a bit. I need to get a game done, I just need to. Arrow followers has turned into larger more long term project. I’m not saying I’m going to drop it, just shelf it for a bit. I originally planned to do a side scrolling shooter by myself for a couple weeks. But if anyone followers my twitter, I posted that there happened to be a change of plans; I mentioned to my friend in my GSP class that I was going to start a “mini project” to get me going again and to actually have a finished game on file. They started talking about something simple we could all do; a top down shooter. Sounds complicated, but I find it very simple in Game Maker. We spent a bit of time last night discussing the feature and right now its sort of looking like COD Nazi zombies top down. Anyways, will post with screens and more info as they appear.

[lonely pixel news]Back!

Well I’ve been back from LA for a week now, but once I got back I had to pack up my stuff and move out of the house. I am now sitting in the loft of my grandmother’s house until we can get on our feet again. Sigh. Nonetheless, I’ve gotten my self settled in again which means I can start getting some more hours in on game development. I’m giving it a few days because I am really, really burnt out from the move. Plus I’ve been sick so I need the rest.

I want to get back into Arrow Followers right away, but I might stray away from it and work on a really, really small project to get my creative juices flowing again. I’m not sure what though; simple puzzle game, small platformer, etc. Plus i need to figure out where I put all my AF notes. >_<

[arrow followers] 03/08/10

So once again (and probably the last time) I took the time in class today to work on Arrow Followers since I had finished my film. It was mostly bug fixes but I tweaked the sprites a bit too. I also worked on the “cave” theme a bit.

But more importantly, I got my idea’s under control; I created a development board. Rather…I finally organized it. Now I can visually see what I need to do and where I need to go. I’d post a picture but it would take a lot of explaining. Just know I’m going to be more organized! =D

[Arrow Followers] Skill Updates.

So I had last time than I had originally thought for this weekend. I had my Game Design and Simulation class at Devry most of saturday, then headed down to SF. Sunday…oh boy…sunday I slept in. I rushed through my homework just to get into Arrow Followers.

But other than that, great news! The “path finding bug” is fixed. Collision checking is still a bit rough, but that just needs a few lines of extra code that I wait till to clean up. The bug was just annoying the hell out of me. Turned out I had set the hero’s to avoid the selector highlights under the heroes. Yes, stupid, I know.

I also finished up two of the spells for the white hero, thought its not really shown in the image. But I’ll be making a game play video soon once I finish the last spell, so I can show off everything and Carlo’s awesome sound effects/music. He did point out some silly mistakes I made, but hey, i was tired. Last night flew by, I looked at the clock and saw it was already getting late so i quick finished it up and sent a build to him and promptly fell asleep. I felt like the public deserved an update so I’m posting this ten minutes before I need to leave for class. =D Dedicated indie developer for the win!

[.lonely pixel news]Busy, Busy, Busy!

So there’s been a massive lack of updates recently, due to the fact that this is my last week to work on my film for the adobe film festival.  I’m just about done, probably by tomorrow, so I’ll have it up on my DeviantArt by the end of the week. Of course I’ll post a link here so everyone can see why I haven’t been updating on Arrow Followers! But trust me, it has been on my mind. I have four pages of notes and ideas sitting in front of me as well as a tack board that contains everything I need to implement, test, fix, draw, and code.

[arrow followers]Cursor and Abilities!

Well I’ve drawn some of my own sprites for the game cursors and ability icons. But ughhhh. I must clean up everything because there are bugs and glitches everywhere. Its so hard trying to figure out whats wrong. But its getting there. =]

[arrow followers] EXP and Leveling! And Sound!

February 23, 2010 Leave a comment

So today, I was finally able to get some DLLs that worked to support OGG files. So now there are a few sound effects and the lava theme. I’ve also slightly improved the path finding collision bug, but still needs to be improved. I’ve also added EXP and leveling which is the first step towards abilities! But boy, does it suck that I only have a few hours a day now to work on the game. Otherwise I’d be cranking out these updates.

[arrow followers] On Updates…

My winter vacation is over and now I’m back in school this week, significantly cutting back on my time on the game. I do plan to keep working on it after school but updates won’t roll out as frequently. Today I ran a bit short and only got an hour to work on the game and I sorta fixed the path finding bug. Also sketched some ideas for abilities.

[arrow followers]HUD

February 21, 2010 Leave a comment

Slowly adding in the HUD, while trying to fix a damn path finding bug! All of the path finding works smoothly except that the hero’s don’t know when to move out of the way when on top of each other. So they stack up in the same location and it is IMPOSSIBLE to separate them. I haven’t worked with path finding before so its taking me longer than an experienced user should.

Anyways, with the HUD, the squares under the portraits will contain images of the three abilities each of the heroes will have. In the blank space on the right, there will be individual, miniature skill trees. They wont have much variety, but I’m aiming for a sort of system that feels like a RPG game condensed into a 5-8 minute level. Of course along with the zombie shooting which hopefully will become more strategical as I work on balancing everything out. It’s just so pointless ATM because I’ll be adding abilities soon and more enemy types/traps in the future.

I will make another game play video once I get the HUD finished…maybe even after abilities.

[arrow followers] Improved pathfinding

Ugh, its taken most of the time spent fixing my crappy path finding code. The other part was changing the rest of the code to adapt to the new path finding. There’s still some bugs that I need to work out but I’m pulling out my hair. I shall work more tomorrow.

Oh but I did add different stats to each hero. =D
